There is no doubt that as soon as you start reading this it is a work of quality, the feel of a set text, executed with superb irony & perception. For all the feminism and female emancipation that has been fought for following the "Catastrophe" the roles of women were reduced to baby making machines to address the low birth rate, valued only for their reproductive organs & ability to conceive, not permitted to read or write. They were Handmaids of the men they were assigned to, their name became that of their Commander "Offred, Ofglen". This dystopian novel is not one to enjoy more to endure like women have in the past, still do in some cultures, & the Handmaids of Gilead. It is a well crafted work that is thought provoking & provides many themes for discussion, religious indoctrination how does it happen? should we take our husbands name on marriage, are we the current "Offred's? How much of Gilead has already existed or does exist somewhere?
